History and Invention of Smartphones
Despite what most may think, Apple's iPhone was not the first invented smartphone in fact, the first smartphone, called Simon, was made 15 years before the iPhone was released! In 1926, Nikola Tesla's interview with Collier foreshadowed the invention of the smartphone. Tesla stated, “It will soon be possible, for instance, for a business man in New York to dictate instructions and have them appear instantly in type in London or elsewhere. He will be able to call up from his desk and talk with any telephone subscriber in the world.” Years later, in 1992, the Simon Personal Communicator was released; this phone was created by the company IBM and it costs around $899. The Simon had many modern features such as a touchscreen, a calendar, a stock and news app and it could also place and receive phone calls. To us, in the 21st century, this seems ancient... although during the time it was invented it was an overkill to the general population. The distributor ended up lowering the price to $599 with a two year contract and even took it off the market after six months because nobody was buying it. Since then, inventors started to release more and more technologically savvy phones step by step until the first iPhone was announced by Steve Jobs in 2007. It turns out that America did not want the smartphone boom all at once, the step by step process of inventing and expanding really caught the attention and sparked their interest.
